賑やかな20日と怖い気持ちとなった21日 Busy 20th and Scary 21st

　昨日は知り合いが個展に来てくれて一日中会話が続き、賑やかとなりお茶を出すことができました。見に来てくれた京都造形芸術大学の先生からも展示の仕方についてのアドバイスをいただきました。

展示の仕方によっては作品とキャプションが近すぎては格好悪く感じるだろうこと、ギャラリースペースの地図を作り、作品の場所とタイトルの一覧を作るのもおもしろそうだということを考えました。

Many acquaintances visited to see the exhibition yesterday, and I enjoyed the busy time chatting and offering tea all day. One of my teachers from Kyoto University Art and Design visited as well, and gave me important advises about exhibition methods. 

After that I thought if my works and captions are too close, it might look bad, and if I make a floor map indicating positions and titles of my works, it might be fun. 

自分から作品の発表をすることは大変重要と思いました。オーナーさんは時々ギャラリーに来て挨拶してくれます。今日は珍しくお客さんが一人もギャラリーに入らず、長時間じっとしながら静かに過ごし、なんだか怖くなってきそうでした。個展をするときにはこんな経験もあるのですね。

I think it is very important to actively exhibit my works. It is also encouraging that the gallery owner visits and greets me for time to time. However, today I have no guest at all, and because I sat silently for such a long time, I started to feel a bit scary in the end. Maybe this kind of experience is also part of doing exhibition.

　

曇り時々雨雪の個展 Exhibition on Cloudy Day (with Sleet Intervals)

今日は天気が悪い日で、お客さんがギャラリーに来てくれるかはわかりませんでした。窓側に展示した非売品の模型について、昨日オーナーさんからやはり値段をつけると良いと勧めてもらいました。はじめは非売品としようと考えていましたが、この模型がほしいと思う方がいる場合のために値段をつけるのが良いと感じました。

The weather wasn’t great today, so I wasn’t sure if I could get many visitors to the gallery. About the not for sale small models I displayed beside the window, the owner advised me yesterday that she still thinks that it’s better to put them price tags. While I had no plan to sell them at first, after hearing her advise, I thought it’s good to prepare price tags in case there is people who wants to purchase these models. 

ギャラリーの向かいの建物で働いているボランティアの方が作品を見に来てくれました。犬好きの方で、ご自分のペット犬や犬の気持ちについて話をしてくれました。また、昨日見に来てくれた近所の方が、昔の日本人芸術家の動物画集の本をたくさん持って再び来てくれました！私は夢中でこの絵を見て面白くなりました。

A volunteer person working at the building in front visited and saw my works. He is a dog lover as well, and chatted with me about feelings of his pet dog and other dogs. Also, the neighbour who visited the gallery yesterday returned with lots of art books of vintage animal paintings by Japanese artists! I was immersed in watching those paintings, enjoyed it very much. 

犬の散歩で知り合った方も見に来てくれて、作品を見て愛情いっぱいに感じたと言ってくれました。また、模型の1点を見て気に入り買ってくれました。25日までは展示して、個展の終了後に直接手渡しすることを約束しました。

The person I often see while walking my dog also visited the gallery, and she told me she could sense my deep affection for dogs from my works. She liked one of my small models and purchased it. I promised her to hand the small model for her after I finish my exhibition on 25th. By then, I will continue displaying it. 

母の大阪の友だちと、私の大学時代の友だち夫婦が見に来てくれ、ゆっくり見ながらもおしゃべりとお茶タイムを楽しみました。母の友だちは模型も1点買ってくれました。オーナーさんの友だち夫妻も見に来てくれたので、オーナーさんに声をかけてそのことを伝えると、彼女もギャラリーに来て、ペットの話題で盛り上がりました。

I enjoyed chatting and having tea with mother’s friend from Osaka, and my friend from college days and her husband. Mother’s friend purchased one small model as well. The owner’s friend and her husband also visited the gallery. So I phoned the owner to let her know, and we had a good chat about pet animals after she joined us. 

夕方には教会の友だちが見にきてくれました。彼女も陶芸の仲間なので、釉薬の攪拌がうまくいかないことを相談しました。すると攪拌する道具で混ぜていくと良いと教えてくれました。お互いにわからないことについて教え合うのはとても大事だと思いました。

My church friend visited the gallery in the evening. She is also a ceramic artist so I told her that I am having difficulties with stirring glaze. Then she told me it’ll be easier if I use a stirrer. I think it’s very important and good to share what you know to each other.

2月の個展開催 Solo Exhibition of February Opened

　今日は11時過ぎにギャラリーに到着し、個展をオープンしました。オーナーさんの知り合いが一番乗りで来てくれて、作品をじっくり見てから販売しているミニチュアの作品を１点買ってくれることになりました。その後、近くにいる方々が次々と興味を持って作品を見つめてくれました。

Today, I arrived at the gallery after 11:00 am, and opened the exhibition. The first person to visit my exhibition was a friend of the gallery owner. She took some time to look my works and purchased one of my miniature pieces. After that, people from neighbourhood visited the venue one after another, and saw my works with interests.  

ギャラリーの上に住んでいる海外の方も作品を見に来たてくれました。英語で話しかけてくれたので、私は英語が苦手ですがなんとか簡単な英語でジェスチャーを使いながら話しました。

A person from other country living above the gallery also visited to see my works. She spoke to me in English, so although I am not good at English, I tried to speak simple sentences with lots of gestures.

DMだけではなく、京都新聞の展覧会紹介欄を見てギャラリー素に来てくれた方もいます。この方は、亡きペット犬について話してくれ、私の愛犬についてもおしゃべりしました。

One of the visitors to the Gallery 素 moto came to see my works after reading an advertisement on the Kyoto Shinbun (newspaper) besides DM. He told me about his late pet dog, and we also talked about my dogs. 

暗くなると体が冷えてきたので、明日はあったかい毛布を持って行くべきだと思いました！

It became very cold after dark. I will take a warm blanket to the gallery tomorrow!

セッティング２ Setting the Venue (Part 2)

今日は昼14時にギャラリー素に来て最後のセッティングの続きをしました。作品キャプションは目線に合う高さに壁に貼り付けます。

Today I went back to the gallery (Gallery 素 moto) on 14:00 pm and finished setting the venue, putting captions of the works on the wall about the eye level. 

模型を置くための黒地に白をにじませた装飾の展示台にアイボリー色のミニチュア作品を置きましたが、その下に配置した展示板の毛並み装飾が浮き上がって見えてしまったため、少し目立たないように黒に白をにじませた色を塗り足し、統一感を持たせるようにしました。

When I put the ivory-white coloured small model on the stand (that I painted black first and oozed white), the wooden board (on which I painted the dog coat motif) below the small model looked a bit splashy. So I painted the board with black and oozed with white, to make it blend in to the stand. 

明日は個展開始です!10日間私がギャラリーにいます。

The solo exhibition will start tomorrow! I will be at the gallery during these 10 days.

セッティング１ Setting the Venue (Part 1)

いよいよ個展が始まる日が近づいてきた! ギャラリーのオーナーさんとそのお手伝いさんと一緒に作品の梱包を外す作業を行いました。

The exhibition date is getting near! At the venue, I unpacked my works with the gallery owner and her assistant. 

またセッティングにとりかかり作品の並びを捉えましたが、少し悩ましく感じました。そこでオーナーさんからのアドバイスを聞いて作品が目立つ並びに変えました。

Then I started to arrange my works, but I felt it wasn’t easy. So I asked the owner for some advises, and re-arranged my works to let them stand out more. 

模型は出入口の窓側に目立つように置き、名簿は部屋の角のほうにある書きやすい高さの机の上に置きました。
I put the small models in plain view by the window at the entrance, and placed the guest book on the desk (the height is just perfect for writing) at the corner of the room. 

異形犬のミニオブジェは毛並み装飾をした板の切れ端を展示台としてセットし、販売します。

I arranged the small objects of heteromorphous dogs on odd pieces of wooden boards with dog coat motif. They are for sale. 

コンセプトのキャプションは販売している作品の上の壁に貼り付けました。残りのセッティング作業は明日続けて行います。
Then I put the caption explaining this exhibition’s concept on the wall above these small objects. I will continue to prepare the venue tomorrow.

2月の個展開催 A Solo Exhibition in February

　4点の新しい作品と、2016年度末作成の作品1点を2月の個展に出展します。個展は今回で3回目です。新作のうちの1点は、1月24日に本焼き焼成を行ったばかりです。

I am going to do my third solo exhibition in February, to which I will exhibit 4 new pieces and one work I made in the end of 2016. One of the new pieces was freshly glost fired on January 24th. 

京都に遊びに来ることがある方、犬にご興味がある方はぜひお越しください。

いくつかのミニオブジェの販売もします。去年の9月の「ing展」に出品したもの、色がうまく出ずに出品できず、その後さらに色を塗り焼き直したものを含みます。今回は思い通りの色となりました。

There are some small objects for sale as well. Some were exhibited at the “ing exhibition” of last September. Others are the pieces that I didn’t exhibit at the time, for I didn’t like the colours. But after that I re-painted and glost fired them again, and this time, the colours went well.

これに加えて、5匹のミニオブジェを非売品として本体と並べて展示します。

In addition to these, I am going to exhibit 5 small pieces (not for sale) with the main pieces. 

                                

異形犬の器の方は、釉薬の透明感を出すためのテストを繰り返しています。しかし、また透明感は半分ほどで、釉薬は完全に溶けてくれませんでした。これは失敗作なので展示することはできません。

釉薬の勉強をしっかり続けていきたいと思います。

As for the heteromorphous dog themed pot, I keep testing glaze to make it transparent. However, this latest piece still looks like half-transparent, meaning that the glaze didn’t dissolved completely. Hence it’s not going to be for exhibition. 

I will do my best to learn more about glaze technique.
